Hydrothermal alteration: reading the radiometric signature
Fabrício Santos · July 24, 2026 · 6 min
Hydrothermal alteration is the record left by the passage of hot fluids through rocks. Because these fluids redistribute the natural radioactive elements, gamma-ray spectrometry can map the "footprint" of the system — often larger and easier to detect than the ore body itself.
What changes during alteration
During alteration, the behavior of the three radiometric elements is distinct:
- Potassium (K): frequently added (potassic alteration) or removed (leaching), depending on the type of system;
- Thorium (eTh): relatively immobile — it serves as a reference to measure what changed;
- Uranium (eU): mobile under oxidizing conditions, it may concentrate or disperse.
Because thorium tends to stay put, comparing K and U against eTh reveals what the fluids actually did.
Useful indices and ratios
Some products help isolate alteration from the background lithology:
- K/eTh: highlights addition (or loss) of potassium;
- U/eTh: emphasizes uranium mobility;
- Anomalous potassium and anomalous uranium: "corrected" versions that estimate how much K or U departs from what is expected for that rock, sharpening the alteration signature.
The ternary image (K, eTh, eU) remains an excellent visual starting point: alteration zones usually break the color pattern of the regional rock.
Zoning: the footprint has shape
Hydrothermal systems often show zoning — rings or belts of alteration around the mineralized core. Radiometrics can capture this spatial organization: a potassic core surrounded by distinct halos, for example. Recognizing zoning helps point which way to walk toward the center of the system.
Don't interpret radiometrics alone
The radiometric signature gains meaning when combined with:
- Structure (magnetometry and derivatives), which defines the fluid conduits;
- Terrain (DEM), which explains where alteration is exposed or covered;
- Geology and occurrences, which anchor the model.
From image to decision
Calculating alteration indices, ratios and ternary images requires careful processing. Automating this step delivers the alteration products ready and cross-referenced with structure — turning the reading of the hydrothermal footprint into something fast and reproducible.
How Lithogeo helps
This is exactly the kind of work the Lithogeo platform automates. From an ANM process number or a polygon of your area, it processes and integrates the public data — magnetometry, gamma-ray spectrometry, geology, terrain and mineral occurrences — and delivers the products described here ready for analysis, in minutes and right in the browser.
Educational content. Radiometric alteration patterns must be validated with geology, geochemistry and, when possible, drilling.
